The Best Football Season Ever: Sports Widows Can Have Their Own Fun!

by : Tzippi Moss

The football season offers great opportunities for us women to rediscover ourselves, while keeping a distance from those who remain perpetually glued to the tube and their munchies week in and week out. So, don’t go in to ‘hibernation’ – here’s how you can take control of this season in some exciting and memorable ways.

Around this time of year I hear of women who feel abandoned. Yes, I’m talking about that unique seasonal male bonding ritual, called NFL Sunday’s and Monday Night Football.

If you are one of those women who begin looking at the T.V. set and plasma screens with hatred and envy, or whose mind starts to numb at the very word “football”, start thanking your guy instead for the wonderful opportunity you’ve just been handed.

What is that, you’re wondering? The chance to create your own Fall season ritual with your women friends. As the men become oblivious to you while tossing back a few beers, chowing down on their favorite junk foods and cheering on their chosen teams, take the ball in your own hands and organize your own celebration.

Remember, if you’re out of the house, you don’t have to deal with listening to the ongoing football commentary, requests for stuff from the kitchen or the assumption that you will be volunteered for clean up duty. If your partner is hopeless with organizing child care or cleaning up after the guys, write him a little love note, or say something that goes like this:

Dear Football-Fan Hubby,

I know how much you love the football season. Sunday’s and Monday nights are holy for you until the day after the Super Bowl. This year I want you to really enjoy yourself. I’ve arranged a baby sitter/cleaner for the kids so that you can watch the games undistracted with your buddies. I’m getting out of the house, as well, so you can really hang out with the guys. You won’t even have to worry about the clean up.

Have a great time and know I love you,…

If on the other hand, your partner shares duties with you, you might try writing or saying the following:

Dear Football Fan Hubby,

I know how much you love the football season. Sunday’s and Monday nights are holy for you until the day after the Super Bowl. This year I really want you to enjoy yourself. That’s why I’ll plan on getting out of the house so you and your friends can have a good time alone. I’m leaving the babysitter and clean up arrangements to you so they suit you best. Have a great time,

Love,…

That’s Stage I. Now for the best part… Stage II.

Gather together a group of your friends and create your own version of female bonding. While it’s always nice to go out to a restaurant or a movie, why not try something a little different?

Consider forming a women’s club that meets every Sunday afternoon or Monday night during the football season. Have a different woman plan each week’s fun, according to her interests and specialties. That way, you may enjoy a spa night, a night tour of historical sites, famous homes, or great architecture in your area, a home crafts evening or one of decadent desserts. If one of you is a bookworm, ask each woman to come dressed as one of her favorite book characters and bring books to swap. The holidays are coming up – brainstorm with your women’s club on creative gifts for your family, while sipping on exotic wine punches and eating warm chestnuts. The possibilities are endless.

So, leave the couch potatoes in their most comfortable position – this year’s football season will never be the same.

Football Crazy Wall Clock

by: S. Roberts

Do you know someone who is football crazy? Is your Dad a footy nut? Is your brother a soccer Fanatic? This is possibly the bestest Crimbo pressie you can make them. You can make it fit any football team of your choosing, or add an assortment of football teams. You could also adapt this idea to make a net-ball, basketball, or rugby clock.

To make a Football Crazy Wall Clock you will need...

Paint, thick card or an old grocery box, a clock mechanism and clock hands (you will find these at craft shops) and a print out of pattern of football shirts which is available at the link below.

Colour the football shirts in the team’s strip you choose. You can colour them randomly if you wish. Number each shirt 1 to 12.

To make the clock face, draw around a large dinner plate or a tea tray onto some card. An old grocery box is great. Cut out two identical circles, and glue them together so that the lines in the cards structure cross, this will give the clock face extra strength.

Once the glue is dry, paint the clock face green. Again leave to dry. With white paint, paint on a centre line through the middle of the clock face, and paint a kick off circle in the middle of the clock.

Push a pencil through the centre of the clock face ready to attach the clock mechanism. Be very careful and use the old Plasticine trick - Put a ball of Plasticine on the table, put your card on top of it where you need the hole to be, and push the pencil through the card and into the Plasticine.

Arrange the football shirts on the clock face and stick them down.

Push the clock spindle through the hole and push on the hands. The mechanism has a hole for hanging the clock on the wall.

Put a battery in the clock and set the time.

Florida Gators Football Tickets - Are We Witnessing The Birth Of A New Dynasty?

by :Jay Nault
Florida Gators football tickets have been hard to find, and the team has held a special place in the hearts of Gators fans, for over 20 years now. The team was a perennial also-ran before the likes of Steve Spurrier showed up in Gainesville and transformed the Gators into a national power. The roots of such a run of dominance were beginning to take hold a bit before Spurrier arrived, but Florida was always a national contender under Spurrier and won the national championship in 1996.

However, after Spurrier left for the NFL, the Gators’ dominance began to wane as the team searched for an identity and lost quite a few games it never would have under their sometimes-controversial leader. Ron Zook, Spurrier’s replacement, was not beloved by any stretch in Gainesville, and he was basically run out of town after the 2004 season.

Zook is now struggling with a very bad Illinois team, and the job of restoring Gator glory fell on Urban Meyer, who was the “hot” coaching candidate after the 2004 season when he led Utah to unprecedented results and rankings. No one thought that Meyer would wind up in Florida, as most had him penciled in for the Notre Dame job, but in a very surprising turn of events, Meyer took the Florida job and declined Notre Dame’s overtures. The results are already beginning to show, and Florida Gators football tickets could once again become nearly impossible to find, as Meyer is building a foundation at Florida that could wind up rivaling Spurrier’s work. Below are a few reasons why this is the case.

Meyer’s System

Let’s face it - big-time college coaches are all more than competent when it comes to preparing a team for a game. There’s a reason they rose through the ranks and got to where they are. So what sets the truly great one apart? When it comes to in-game coaching, it’s the system that they have in place. Meyer’s spread offense is famous for its creativity and the difficulty it presents opponents in defending it. No one has really figured out how to stop it, and now that Meyer is in his second year, his system is beginning to take hold.

This spread offense has made several average-to-decent quarterbacks great ones, and one only need look at the current exploits of Chris Leak and Tim Tebow as well as how things worked out for Alex Smith at Utah to see just how effective this system can be. It’s possible that none of these quarterbacks would be NFL prospects without Meyer’s coaching, but Smith wound up being the first overall pick in the draft and Leak is headed to the NFL next season. Tebow, with the benefit of having four years under Meyer, has a ceiling that can’t even be defined at this point. Great offensive coaching leads to great quarterback play, and in college football, that alone can be enough to run a team through its schedule with a lot of wins.

Recruiting

Under Zook, the Gators were starting to lose a few of the recruiting battles that they had grown accustomed to winning under Spurrier, but Meyer has changed all of that. Meyer’s reputation is such that players want to go play for him, which does not bode well for Miami and Florida State, Florida’s traditional recruiting rivals. One can already see a few cracks in Miami’s and Florida State’s talent levels, and don’t think for a second that Meyer doesn’t have anything to do with that.

Great recruiting builds a great talent base, and even though Florida had what many considered to be the most brutal schedule in the country this season, the Gators are flying high and have a shot to qualify for the national championship game if they run the table through the rest of their SEC schedule.

All in all, a coaching system and a reputation lead to a recruiting advantage, and this recruiting advantage leads to a loaded roster, which Florida has already under Meyer. All of this can come together and lead to a run of national dominance, which is the direction in which Florida appears to be headed. If you’ve been faithfully using your Florida Gators football tickets during the recent “down years,” you may be rewarded soon for your patience

Parenting Skills - Five Ways to Turbo-Boost Your Confidence

by: Frank McGinty

The 'phone conversation had nothing at all to do with parenting. However, it made me think...

"Hello, Eastbank Football Club. Can I help you?" "Good morning, may I speak with the Assistant Coach, please?" "Oh, I'm sorry. He's still on vacation." "I see. Is anyone on the coaching staff there?" "No, they're all away right now. The club's closed for another week yet. I'm only the Groundsman." "Well, thanks anyway. And hey, why say you're only the Groundsman? If it wasn't for you, there wouldn't be a football club. They'd have nowhere to play!" (Pause) "Yeah, I'd never really thought of it like that. (Laughter) Thanks a lot, pal, you've made my day!"

So often we do ourselves down, don't we? We devalue our own contribution or service. "I'm only a shop assistant!" "I'm only a . . . " (fill in the blank!) Sometimes we even hear women say: "I'm just a housewife"!

Confidence and self-esteem are often in short supply these days. And nowhere more so than in PARENTING!

Even those who are superbly confident in their work or social situations, often teeter on the edge when it comes to their parenting skills.

Why?

Is it something to do with the breakdown in old-fashioned values and concepts of authority; the widening gulf between kids and their parents; the dangers we as parents are so acutely aware of, but which are casually dismissed by our kids?

Whatever the causes, there's a lot you can do to improve things.

Step 1 Dr Norman Vincent Peale, author of The Power Of Positive Thinking, used to advise people to sit down and write out a list of all their assets and abilities.

But Dr Peale's next suggestion is crucial. Once the list of assets and abilities has been written, he tells us to raise the stakes. Simply BELIEVE that you are at the very least 10% better than you think. It's now widely acknowledged in modern psychology that you'll still be way off the mark! So have faith. You're better than you think.

Step 2 Do some study. You probably weren't taught parenting skills at school or college, yet parenting is the most vital contribution to society. There are lots of books, courses, tapes, CDs and videos on parenting. No excuses! Grab some and get busy. Knowledge and insight bring confidence. Whatever stage you're at, you can improve yourself.

Step 3 Learn to temper your reaction in stressful parenting situations. Easier said than done! But you can make a conscious effort to stay calm and remind yourself of Dr Peale's advice (You're more capable than you think you are!), and you can put into practice what you've been studying about family dynamics.

Step 4 Develop yourself in some way. Yes, remember those piano lessons you once took, or that art class you attended? Interests like these are great stress relievers and they build self-confidence - which is vital for parenting. If you feel you're already confident in other matters, but it's only in parenting you feel a lack, why not take up some activity with your kids? Learning together brings you together, and can be great fun!

Step 5 Finally, resist any temptation to go it alone. Nature intended us to be social creatures. Seek advice from grandparents, relatives, friends. Overcome your pride. Discuss your parenting challenges with others and draw on the communal strength. And d'you know what? You'll find you're not alone. Let's work on parenting together, as a community.

Lazio's Greatest XI

by : Dennis Neri

Lazio enjoyed their greatest triumphs in the late 90s and before 2003 with Zdenek Zeman and Sven Goran Ericsson when they won countless cups and the Scudetto for the first time in their existence.

Goalkeeper

They have had 2 genuine contenders for the best ever goalkeeper and I have picked Angelo Peruzzi over Luca Marchegiani because he was a, well, better goalkeeper.

Right back

I have gone for Paolo Negro over Massimo Oddo because of his longevity at the club. Mauro Tassotti was more associated with his time at AC Milan.

Left Back

I have gone for Guiseppe Favalli for the amount of quality performances he gave to Lazio down the years. The likes of Guiseppe Pancaro and Jose Chamot are worthy of mentions.

Centre Backs

Alessandro Nesta has got to be the finest defender to have ever played for Lazio and the fact that he is Lazio born and bred is an added bonus. I have chosen Jaap Stam as his partner because he gave 3 good years at Lazio and also because of lack of quality alternatives in that position. Fernando Couto and Sinisa Mihalovic however do warrant a mention and Nestor Sensini did not play enough games for Lazio.

Right-winger

I have gone for Stefano Fiore, as over a period of time, he was the most consistent in his position beating out the likes of Attilio Lombardo, Sergio Conceicao and Roberto Rambaudi.

Central Midfield

Lazio have been blessed over the years with lots of quality to play for them. Players like Diego Fuser, Roberto Di Matteo, Vladamir Jugovic, Giuliano Giannichedda, Giorgio Venturin, Juan Sebastián Verón, Aron Winter, César, Karel Poborský, Michael Laudrup, Paul Gascoigne, Fabio Liverani, Thomas Doll, Giovanni Stroppa and Dejan Stankovi. But I have gone for Diego Simone and Pavel Nedved.

I never did understand why Lazio had to sell Simone to Inter Milan because he was fantastic for them and Nedved was just sublime during his spell at Lazio and was perhaps their most valuable player.

Forwards

Again, Lazio have had so many top quality forwards down the years. Players like Pierluigi Casiraghi, Igor Protti, Bruno Giordano, Christian Vieri, Marcelo Salas, Ruben Sosa, Karlheinz Riedle, Roberto Mancini, Claudio López, Hernán Crespo, Simone Inzaghi and Paolo Di Canio.

But I have gone for 3 players that were fantastic during their time at Lazio. Alen Boksic, with his running power and direct play, Beppe Signori with his wonderful array of goals and the sheer volume of them and perhaps Lazio's greatest ever player, Giorgio Chinaglia.
